Our Mission

Hermann Hospital is here to strengthen the communities that built it through compassionate and personalized care.

Our Vision

Hermann Hospital will continue to be a trusted community partner for generations to come.

Who Are We?

Hermann Area District Hospital is a 24 bed Critical Access Hospital located in the beautiful town of Hermann, Missouri at 509 W. 18th Street, just over the hill from Stone Hill Winery.

We are honored to have been the first district hospital in the state of Missouri due to the efforts of a small group of people in the 1960s who felt the strong need to have a hospital in our rural community. Because of their efforts, we are here today and are fortunate to have saved and aided countless lives throughout the years. We are happy and honored to have served our community’s healthcare needs these past 50 plus years and look forward to another 50.

We may be over 50 years old, however our building has had a total renovation in 2009, allowing us to offer a state-of-the-art building to our patients and families. We invite you to visit and are welcome to come by for a tour. Let us know ahead of time and we’ll be sure to have someone available to show you around.

Hermann Hospital offers a variety of services for our patients, such as Emergency Care, Surgery Services, Skilled Care, Acute Care, Rehab Therapy, Sleep Studies, and cardiac rehab that reaches throughout our hospital district. We have a full Clinical Laboratory onsite, as well as a Radiology/Imaging, Respiratory Care, and more. There are also several Outpatient Clinics available to our patients, which are located onsite at Hermann Hospital: Audiology, Cardiology, Oncology, Orthopedic, Podiatry, Dermatology, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy.

Our hospital has grown through the years, resulting in the ownership and operations of two health clinics, one of which is located in Hermann, and one other Montgomery City. We have experienced and caring Providers who are available to address your needs.

Also to note, Hermann Area District Hospital is the largest employer in the city of Hermann, offering over 200 positions and opportunities for those in our community, and surrounding communities. With our ability to employ so many, we in turn, are able to not only help the health of our community members, but also the financial health of our community’s economy.

Our staff, the People Who Care, are here to provide quality and personalized care to our patients. As a patient, you are not a number without a name, but a name and a person to our staff. Our focus is on working to get you better, while providing kindness and compassion along the way.

We hope you choose Hermann Area District Hospital for your healthcare needs. Let us know how we can help.

HADH Administration

Bill Hellebusch

Administrator

Bill received his doctorate degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2010. Since then, he has served Mercy-Hermann in various bedside and leadership roles. In his current position, Executive Director of Operations, Bill oversees all support services (food services, custodial and maintenance, supply chain, etc.). He also manages several clinical departments (with both inpatient and outpatient functions) and clinic-based physician offices. Bill has a history of effectively collaborating with all operative levels within the Mercy organization - from front line staff to physicians and executives.  One key to Bill's success is effective communication. He genuinely cares about people and routinely makes time to listen to the concerns and ideas brought to him by coworkers, providers and patients.  On June 1, 2023, Bill assumed the additional position of Administrator, Hermann Area District Hospital. While he continues to serve Mercy-Washington, Bill can be found onsite at Mercy-Herman at least three days per week.  Bill has many goals and aspirations for Mercy-Herman and will likely spend more time on campus as he works towards making his vision a reality. Bill grew up just 15 minutes north of Hermann in the rural Jonesburg area. He has frequented the town since childhood and is very familiar with the Hermann community. Bill and his wife, Ali, currently live in Washington with their four children. When not at work, Bill can be found with his family on his homestead, Rhine Valley Farm, at a Go Hog Wild 4-H meeting, or on a baseball diamond coaching little league.

Susan Duck

Chief Operating Officer

Susan Duck, RN, joins Hermann Hospital as Chief Operating Officer, bringing 27 years of nursing experience, including 25 years at Mercy Hospital Washington where she excelled as Director of Emergency and Trauma Services. Known for her exceptional leadership and operational excellence, Susan will oversee all nursing clinical functions at Hermann, including inpatient, ER, and surgery, as well as certain outpatient and ancillary services. She has been a consultant for Ministry-wide ED work, providing leadership support and guidance. Outside of work, Susan enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and kayaking with her husband Scott, and spending time with their two daughters and grandson.

Kali Van Booven

Director of Nursing

It is my pleasure to announce that Kali Van Booven has been appointed to be our next Director of Nursing at HADH. Kali started her nursing career at Mercy St. Louis as an ICU Registered Nurse, where she worked for 1.5 years before settling into Hermann Hospital. Kali gained exceptional nursing knowledge while an ICU nurse, that carved her eye for detail and close attention and examination of her patients. Kali then became the Director of Home Health in 2020 and remained until its closure at the end of 2022. In this role, she facilitated the daily operations of the agency, including State and Federal compliance, managed staffing, and was an integral member of the interdisciplinary team. At the closure of the department, Kali transitioned to the Director of Cardiac Rehab, knowing she wished to stay at HADH. Within this role, she worked independently in the department, ensuring patient’s cardiac health and all related nursing tasks (trying to explain how she was solely responsible for the department).

In the role of Director of Nursing, Kali will be responsible for all nursing duties in relation to Observation, Acute and Skilled Care patients (ER?). ??

In her time away from work, Kali enjoys spending time with her two children, Hank and Bo, along with her husband, Cole. When time allows, she enjoys being outdoors and traveling.

Please join me in welcoming Kali to her new role!

Matt Siebert

Executive Director of Talent & Operations

Healthcare is challenging, complex, and ever-changing. Along with that, it begs that we challenge the ‘status quo,’ step outside of our comfort zone, and reinvent how we do business. It is in this vein that I have asked Matt Siebert to take on a new challenge as our Executive Director – Talent & Business Initiatives. This position was especially developed with Matt’s unique strengths and talents in mind. As the Assistant Administrator, Matt has spent the last several years leading the operations for Imaging, Lab, Therapy, RT, IT, and Support Services. Matt also has extensive experience with developing crucial evaluations and submitting business assessments for healthcare systems. Some past successes include several meaningful use attestations resulting in over $1.2M in increased revenue for HADH, serving as our admin user for NextGen, and successfully garnering a partnership with the community to submit a Community Health Needs Assessment in 2016. It is these talents that I have asked Matt to assume the role of our lead strategic partner for Human Resources, where he will help us find, attract, and retain new talent. Matt has also agreed to serve in a new capacity, working to procure grants for HADH through grant writing. Matt will retain his oversight of our IT department and will continue with meaningful use reporting and price transparency. To allow Matt time to focus on his new responsibilities, leadership of his current departments will be divided among Sue Daller, as mentioned above, and myself. Matt received a Bachelor of Science degree in Radiologic Technology and a Master's degree in Health Administration from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He and his wife, Gemma, live in Hermann, MO where he has served on the local board of the Crusade for Cancer and is also currently a member of Saint George Catholic Church.

It is my pleasure to welcome Ashten Heying as HADH’s newest member of the administrative team as our new Executive Assistant. Ashten graduated with her Masters of Social Work (MSW) in 2016 from the University of Missouri – Columbia. She has served as HADH’s Director of Social Services since 2017 and has been an integral part of our clinical operations lending exceptional service to our patients and their families. In her new role, Ashten will be immediate assistant to our Executive Leadership team and will help keep our operations and new endeavors running smoothly. Her role will be critical and I have no doubt she is up for the challenge. Ashten has graciously agreed to continue in her social work role 2 days per week (Wednesday and Friday) and attend all utilization review committee meetings while we search for her replacement – thank you, Ashten! Ashten, a 31 year resident of Hermann, MO likes to travel and spend time with her husband, Wes, and their 3-year-old daughter, Elsie. Please join me in welcoming Ashten as our new Executive Assistant.

Cindi Engemann

Chief Financial Officer

It is my pleasure to announce Cindi Engemann as HADH’s newest Executive Leader. Effective 9/17/23 Cindi will assume the role of Chief Financial Officer for our hospital. Cindi has been working in the accounting role for our hospital since 2019. Prior to that Cindi and her husband owned and operated multiple grain elevators – the operations of which was of the highest ranks of privately owned elevators in the state of Missouri. Cindi successfully navigated annual commodity audits totaling millions of dollars in product and positioned their business and their customers for success year after year. Cindi has a BS in Business Administration and Management. Since starting here Cindi has assumed responsibility for several projects and in so doing has learned the details behind cost reporting, end of year audits, in addition to general ledger accounting of the hospital accounts. As CFO, Cindi will continue to expand on her knowledge and will provide leader expertise for Hermann’s financial success. In her new role Cindi will assume the leadership of all finances, cost reporting, board reporting, end of year audits, payroll, accounts payable, and will also become the accountable executive of the billing department. Cindi and her husband have two sons, both of whom are pilots, and two grandchildren. In her spare time Cindi enjoys renovating her 150 year old farm house which is part of the Century Farm where she grew up. She also enjoys gardening and volunteering at the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows at Starkenburg. By far, however, her favorite pastime is cooking a meal and enjoying it with family and friends. Please welcome Cindi to her new role.

Successful provider recruitment, onboarding, enrollment, and staffing is crucial to our continued success. Ellen Schaumberg – Executive Director of Clinics and Provider Relations has decades of experience working with HADH’s rural health clinics and providers. She has done an outstanding job of keeping our community’s provider needs covered. Most recently, Ellen has championed and led the work behind HADH initiating a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) and has been instrumental in 340B Contracting. Ellen will continue this important work while also taking on the responsibility of overseeing our outpatient specialty clinic where she will work to attract new specialties that the community needs. Ellen will also be assuming the important responsibility of ensuring our hospital has adequate provider staffing daily. Lastly, Ellen will continue the important work of provider enrollment and payer relations.

    Mission:

“The Hospital Auxiliary’s mission is to inspire, support, and enhance the well-being of Hermann Area District Hospital.”

    About the HADH Auxiliary:

The Hermann Area District Hospital Auxiliary is an organization that continues to support Hermann Hospital in a variety of ways throughout the years.  This is especially true through the financial support from the fundraisers and events the Auxiliary holds each year.  In recent years, the Hospital Auxiliary donated $45,000 towards the Echocardiogram Ultra Sound machine.  The Auxiliary also donated $7,000 towards a needed life-saving Ventilator, as well as $13,000 towards new wheelchairs and Geri chairs for patients at the hospital.  The donations from the Auxiliary have greatly helped Hermann Hospital serve its patients with the necessary, up-to-date equipment. Annually the Auxilliary gives a 4 year scholarship to a Gasconade R-1 graduate who is planning on going into the medical field.

    Current Officers:

    President: Alicia Winkelmann

    Vice President: Debbie Ketterer

    Secretary: Shirley Viola

    Events & Activities –

Ongoing Service - Personal Emergency Response System (PERSYS):

The Hospital Auxiliary offers a beneficial and life-saving service to the Hermann area through the Personal Emergency Response System, or as many call it, PERSYS, for short.  PERSYS is similar to Life Alert pendants that are worn by seniors and those with disabilities to have available in case of an emergency.  PERSYS is more affordable than the Life Alert pendants due to the work of the Auxiliary volunteers. Learn more of the details about our PERSYS program.

  • HADH FOUNDATION

A logo for the hermann area district hospital foundation

The Hospital Foundation was developed for the sole purpose to operate exclusively for the benefit of Hermann Area District Hospital.  While donations can be made directly to the hospital since it is a political subdivision, some people would rather donate to a separate foundation, thus the formation of the Hospital Foundation.  The Foundation shall endeavor to grow an endowment fund which will be held with the Community Foundation of the Ozarks.  The hospital Board shall make requests to the Foundation Board to assist in the purchase or lease of items deemed necessary to maintain a state of the art hospital facility in a rural community.  When approved, the Foundation Board will recommend the funds deemed necessary be disbursed from the account in the Community Foundation of the Ozarks.

The monies in the account are meant to grow in perpetuity and not to be used for the day to day operations of the hospital.  The hope of the Foundation is that it will grow and monies from interest will support the excellence of the Hermann Area District Hospital.

  • Mercy Affiliate

    Affiliate mercy logo has

Hermann Area District Hospital is affiliated with the Mercy Hospital organization.  Our affiliation to Mercy came about due to a requirement as a Critical Access Hospital.  This affiliation to Mercy Hospital has brought on a stronger relationship to our neighbor, Mercy Hospital in Washington, who also treats many members within our community.  Our affiliation has allowed us to grow together and work together for the good of our community and for our patients. Our affiliation has improved communications which directly benefits and positively impacts patient care.

One example of our affiliation is that a representative of Mercy Hospital in Washington attends our Board Meetings each month where thoughts and ideas are shared.  This allows each of our hospitals to learn and grow from one another and find ways to improve processes between each other when needed.  Another example is when Mercy and Hermann Hospital work together on the care of a patient, such as handling needed tests for a patient, or the transfer of a patient to Hermann Hospital for Skilled Care.  This relationship between our hospitals benefits a higher quality of communication and understanding regarding our patients and the processes taking place, which in turn results in higher quality of care for our patients overall.
