Exceed Goal of 47 with 61 Units Collected
Article Date: August 20, 2013
Thanks to everyone who donated blood at The American Red Cross blood drive on August 15, 2013. The drive was co-sponsored by Hermann Area District Hospital & St. George Home and School and was held in the St. George Gymnasium where 61 pints of blood were collected. Each pint of blood can be divided into three components—red cells, platelets and plasma—giving our blood drive the possibility of impacting 183 lives. While it is impossible at the time of donation to know how that specific donation will be used, there are more uses for blood than many people realize. Whole blood often is needed for surgery patients and trauma victims. For example, a single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood. The blood used in an emergency is already on the shelves before the event occurs. Cancer patients may also need significant amounts of blood. More than one million people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment. To learn more about how donating blood can help a patient in need go to www.redcrossblood.org Thanks again to those of you who gave a part of yourself to help patients in need.
